Value of Old Banknotes from The Bank of British Columbia of Victoria, Canada

Old Money from The Bank of British Columbia of Victoria

The Bank of British Columbia opened in 1862 in Victoria.  It had a royal charter.  Each bank note references “Incorporated By Royal Charter 1862.”  The bank had a successful run and was eventually purchased by The Canadian Bank of Commerce on January 2, 1901.  Our guide has more information about bank notes from this institution.

Bank Notes from 1862 – 1875:

These early bank notes from The Bank of British Columbia are very rare.  One, five, twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar bills were issued.  As you might expect, each note has a vignette of Queen Victoria.  Exact dates include Nov. 28 1862, 6th Jany 1863, 24 June 1863, 30 June 1863, March 31st 1864, 15th May 1873, and 23rd May 1875.  Specimens, remainders, and issued bank notes exist.  Please contact us if you need a free appraisal.

Bank Notes from 1879:

These are some really unique bank notes.  The serial number is printed on the front twice (which is standard).  The back of each note has the same serial number in huge text.  Wm. Brown & Co. 40 & 41 Old Broad St. London printed five, ten, twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar bank notes for The Bank of British Columbia.  The exact date on each note is 1st June 1879.  All of these bank notes are very rare.

Bank Notes from 1894:

These are lovely, rare, and beautiful bank notes.  The Bank of Britsh Columbia issued $5, $10, $20, and $50 bills dated as Jany 1st 1894.  This time the American Bank Note Co. was awarded the printing contract.  Just like the earlier bank notes, these also have large serial numbers printed on the reverse of each note.  Printing totals per denomination look like this: $5 – 150,000, $10 – 100,000, $20 – 50,000, $50 – 25,000.  These are all very rare and popular.  Please contact us if you have one for sale.
