Old Money from The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick in Fredericton

Three different banks in Fredericton printed currency.  Paper money from The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick isn’t the rarest, but it is generally considered the most popular and it can be quite valuable.  This bank really doesn’t have much of an interesting story.  It opened in 1864.  The bank was well managed by the Randolph family for more than four decades.  In 1907 The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick was bought by The Bank of Montreal for $350 a share.  Today collectors have many different designs, years, and denominations of bank notes to collect thanks to the longevity and success of the bank.

Bank Notes from 1863 – 1873:

These are probably the least interesting bank notes printed by The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick.  The plates used to print this currency were modified from plates owned by The Central Bank of New Brunswick, so these designs are mostly just retreads.  One, two, and five dollar bank notes were printed.  Each note has a partially engraved date.  These were issued for September 1st 1864, May 1st 1867, and April 1st 1873.  Five dollar bank notes have yet to be discovered.  One and two dollar bills exist, but they are very rare.  All bank notes were printed by the American Bank Note Co. New York.  Each note should be signed by S.W. Babbitt and A.F. Randolph.

Bank Notes from 1874:

These were printed by the American Bank Note Co. New York and British American Bank Note Co. Montreal.  Your bank note could have a date that reads as 2nd Jany 1874 or 2nd January 1874.  One, two, five, and ten dollar bills were printed with the 1874 date.  The two lower denominations are occasionally available.  The two higher denominations are prohibitively rare.  We have a two dollar bill from 1874 pictured on the bottom of this page.

Bank Notes from 1881:

One, two, and ten dollar bank notes were printed in 1881 by The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick.  Each note should be signed by J.W. Spurden and A.F. Randolph.  Notes will have an issue date of 1st December 1881 or 1st Decr 1881.  These have the same designs and are as rare as bank notes from 1874.

Bank Notes from 1885:

One and five dollar bank notes were printed by The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick in 1885.  They can be dated as 2nd Jany 1885 or 2nd Nov 1885.  One dollar bills are rare and five dollar bills are very rare.

Bank Notes from 1897:

The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick contracted with the British American Bank Note Co. Ottawa to print $5, $10, $20, and $50 bills.  Each bank note should be dated as June 22nd 1897.  Each bill should be signed by J.W. Spurden or W.B. Coulthard along with A.F. Randolph.  It is currently thought that none of these bank notes are held with collectors (only museums).

Bank Notes from 1904:

Bank note issues from July 1st 1904 were limited to the five and ten dollar bill.  Both denominations are very rare and exceptionally difficult to locate today.

Bank Notes from 1905:

The last bank notes issued by The Peoples Bank of New Brunswick were $50 bills.  They are dated as October 6th 1905.  We have one pictured below.  All of these bank notes should be considered very rare.
