Old Money from La Banque Provinciale Du Canada in Montreal

La Banque Provinciale Du Canada originally opened under the name La Banque Jacques Cartier in 1862.  It changed its name to La Banque Provinciale Du Canada in 1900.  This bank again changed names in 1979 when it merged with The Unity Bank.  We are of course focused on La Banque Provinciale’s paper money.  It issued bank notes from 1900 to 1936.  A general rule is that the older the note is, the more valuable it will be.  Our guide below has much more information.  We would still encourage you to contact us if you would like a free appraisal.  We are also buyers.

Bank Notes from 1900:

The British American Bank Note Co. Montreal printed five and ten dollar bills for La Banque Provinciale in 1900.  Each note has an engraved date of July 2nd 1900.  G.N. Ducharme’s signature appears on each bank note.  Five dollar bills are rare and ten dollar bills are even rarer.  Please contact us for exact value information.

1907 $5 Bills:

Each 1907 $5 bill from La Banque Provinciale Du Canada has a portrait of Tancrede Bienvenu and H. Laporte.  Laporte’s engraved signature is also on each bank note.  These five dollar bill are occasionally available in low grades.  They are very scarce in high grade.

1907 $10 Bills:

These are dated as 1er Juin 1907 aka June 1st 1907.  These also have engraved portraits of Bienvenu and Laporte.  1907 $10 bills are very rare.  They were printed in small quantities and not many are around today.

1913 $5 Bills:

We know that 375,000 1913 $5 bills were issued by La Banque Provinciale Du Canada.  These are the rarest bank notes from the 1913 – 1928  type design.  The engraved date reads as 2 Janvier 1913.  Please contact us if you need help pricing your bank note.

1913 $10 Bills:

These notes are occasionally available in low grades.  1913 $10 bills that grade higher than fine should be worth more than $1,000.  These were printed by both the American Bank Note Co. Ottawa and The Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited.  Records show that 125,000 of these notes were printed.

1919 $5 Bills:

La Banque Provinciale Du Canada issued two different types of 1919 $5 bills.  Each is dated as 31 Janvier 1919.  One has an orange tint and the other has a green tint.  Green tint notes are more common.  We have one shown below.  A total of 2,080,000 of these were printed for both varieties combined.

1919 $10 Bills:

These 1919 ten dollar bills also come in two different varieties.  Some have a brown tint and others have an orange tint.  We have the more common brown tint shown below.  Approximately 1.4 million 1919 $10 bills were issued by La Banque Provinciale Du Canada.

1928 $5 Bills:

Records show that 1.2 million 1928 $5 bills were issued by La Banque Provinciale Du Canada.  Each note has a portrait of Laporte and Bienvenu.  The engraved date reads as 1er Aout. 1928.  These are readily available in most conditions.

1928 $10 Bills:

This is a relatively common bank note.  We know that 600,000 were printed.  Most lightly circulated examples should sell for around $200.  The exact value could be more or less based on the technical grade of each bank note.

1928 $20 Bills:

This is actually the only $20 bill issued by La Banque Provinciale Du Canada.  One hundred thousand of them were printed.  That is a relatively small number but these have survived in numbers such that the supply easily meets the demand.  This is the first note from the bank to feature an engraved portrait of J.B. Rolland.

1935 $5 Bills:

We don’t know exactly how many of these 1935 $5 bills were issued by La Banque Provinciale Du Canada.  However, we do know that these are relatively common today.  Each note has a portrait of S.J.B. Rolland and an engraved date of Le 2 Janv 1935 or 2nd Jan 1935.

1935 $10 Bills:

The English date on these would read as January 2nd 1935.  That really isn’t that long ago in the scheme of things.  These ten dollar bank notes are available in all conditions today.  Each note has a typed signature of S.J.B. Rolland and Chs. A. Roy.

1936 $5 Bills:

When dealing with La Banque Provinciale Du Canada’s $5 bills you want to look for examples with a green back.  That variety is worth almost twice as much as blue back notes.  Each note still has a portrait of Charles Arthur Ray and an engraved date of le 1er Sept. 1936 or 1st September 1936.  The signature of Ray and J.U. 1936 $10 Bills:

These notes are rarer if they have a green back instead of an orange back.  Both $5 and $10 bills from 1936 are valued the same and look very similar.  The English version of the date on these would read as September 1st 1936.
