Value of Old Banknotes from The Union Bank of Lower Canada in Quebec

Old Money from The Union Bank of Lower Canada in Quebec

The Union Bank of Lower Canada was open from 1865 to 1886.  The bank was successful and in 1886 it changed its name to the Union Bank of Canada.  Our guide below has more information about the bank notes it issued while using the Union Bank of Lower Canada title.

Bank Notes from 1866:

These are denominated as one, two, four, and five dollar bills.  One and two dollar bank notes are occasionally available.  Four and five dollar notes are very rare.  All denominations were printed by The American Bank Note Co.  Each note should be dated as March 1st 1866.  Some notes have overprints, others do not.  The note could be overprinted with two red “S”s as seen below.  There could be a blue overprint for OTTAWA, MONTREAL, or THREE RIVERS.

Bank Notes from 1870 & 1871:

These two years are grouped together because they were all printed by The British American Bank Note Co. Montreal & Canada.  The five and ten dollar bills have an 1870 date.  Four, twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar bills are dated as 1871.  Exact dates are Sept. 1st 1870, August 1st 1871, and 1st Dec 1871.  Some $4 bills issued by The Union Bank of Lower Canada exist.  All other bank notes are very scarce.  Some notes could have “MONTREAL” printed twice in red ink.
