Old Money from The Farmers Bank of Rustico

The Farmers Bank of Rustico has an interesting history.  First off, it was the only chartered bank to be headquartered in Rustico, Province of Prince Edward Island.  It was also significantly smaller than all other chartered banks.  The bank operated from 1862 until 1894.  The Farmers Bank of Rustico was virtually forced to close by the Canadian government because of stringent requirements the government applied to chartered banks.  Fortunately for collectors though, we have some very rare bank notes from Rustico.  See our guide below.

Bank Notes from 1864:

Early bank notes from The Farmers Bank of Rustico were printed by The American Bank Note Co.  Each note was hand signed by Marin J. Blancard and Jerome Doiron.  One, two, and five dollar bills were issued with a date of 2nd November 1864.  These are also denominated as four shillings, eight shillings, and one pound.  Half of the text is also in French.  All denominations are very rare today.  We have a proof $5 bill shown below.  Proofs are much more common than issued bank notes.  We know that at least 10,000 bank notes were issued.  Of course most have since been destroyed.

Bank Notes from 1872:

The Farmers Bank of Rustico used the same bank note designs from 1864 on its 2nd Jany 1872 issues.  These one, two, and five dollar bills are much more available, but still rare.  One and two dollar bills from 1872 can have red or blue serial numbers.  Red numbers are far rarer.  Please contact us if you need a free appraisal.  We are also buying all notes from Rustico.
