Old Money from The St. Stephen’s Bank

This bank was located in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.  It was open from 1836 to 1910.  The bank operated with basically no competition.  It ultimately closed in 1910 and its assets were sold to the Bank of British North America.  Our guide below has more information about the paper money the bank issued.

Bank Notes from 1836 – 1860:

We are grouping all of these notes together because they are rarely encountered by the average collector or seller.  Even the most common notes from this time period are going to be worth at least $2,000.  If you have a bank note from The St. Stephen’s Bank that was issued before 1861, then please send us some pictures of it.  We can check it for varieties and tell you what it is worth.

Bank Notes from 1863:

1863 marks the first year that currency from St. Stephen’s Bank starts becoming more collectible.  All of these bank notes were printed by The American Bank Note Co. New York and dated as May 1st 1863.  One, two, three, and five dollar bills were issued.  Each denomination has two varieties.  Some say “Z. Chipman” and others say “Bank of New York.”  New York notes are much rarer than Chipman notes.  Each note has a portrait of William Todd.  Mr. Todd and an R. Watson signed each bank note.  Please contact us if you need help valuing your bill.  Even though these are more common than some earlier issues they can still sell for good money.

Bank Notes from 1873 – 1886:

Bank notes from this time period are grouped together because they have similar designs.  Dates include 1st Oct 1873, 1st March 1880, and 1st Feby 1886.  One, two, three, and five dollar bills were issued.  William Todd is on the two lower denominations and Queen Victoria is pictured on the two higher denominations.  Many of these bank notes are available for around $1,000.  However, some denominations and years are worth more money, especially in high grades.  Contact us for details.

Bank Notes from 1892 & 1903:

All of these bank notes were signed by J.F Grant and W.H. Todd or Frank Todd.  They can be dated as 2nd Jan 1892 or 2nd Jan 1903.  Only five, ten, and twenty dollar bills were issued by The St. Stephen’s Bank.  Both lower denominations are very rare and seldomly encountered.  Twenty dollar bills have yet to be discovered.  These are the most modern and colorful of the bank’s issues.  These are popular with collectors.  We would certainly welcome the chance to purchase one.
