Old Money from Eastern Townships Bank in Sherbrooke

The Eastern Townships Bank operated out of Sherbrooke, Quebec.  It was open from 1855 until 1912.  The Canadian Bank of Commerce purchased The Eastern Townships Bank in 1912, thus adding 100 branches to its operation.  Most currency from this bank is at least somewhat rare.  Read our guide for more information.

Bank Notes from 1859 & 1861:

The bank first issued currency dated as August 1st 1859 and 1st February 1861.  All of these early bank notes have an engraved location of Sherbrooke.  Red overprints for Stansbrdige, Stanstead, and Waterloo could also be present.  The American Bank Note Company printed one, two, four, five, ten, and twenty dollar bills for The Eastern Townships Bank.  Queen Victoria is pictured on $1 and $2 bills.  The Prince of Wales and Banjamin Pomroy have their portraits on $4 bills.  Mr. Pomroy also signed each bank note.  Other signors include W.R. Doak, Wm. S. Foster, and William Farwell Jr.  All paper money from this time period is rare.  Please contact us if you need a free appraisal.

Bank Notes from 1873 & 1874:

Bank notes from 1st July 1873 and 1st July 1874 were printed by The British American Bank Note Co. Montreal.  William Farwell and Benjamin Pomroy are individually or jointly pictured on all 1873 and 1874 $4, $5, $10, $50, and $100 bills.  All bank notes from both years are very rare.  The Eastern Townships Bank issued very few of them.

Bank Notes from 1879 – 1902:

These bank notes are grouped together because denomination designs were reused for 1879, 1893, and 1902.  The Eastern Townships Bank issued four, five, ten, and twenty dollar bills dated as either 1st July 1879, 2nd Jan. 1893, or 2nd July 1902.  Neil Dinning signed some bank notes.  R.W. Heneker and William Farwell signed and are either jointly or individually pictured on each of these bank notes.  Generally speaking, the $4 and $5 bills are occasionally available.  The two higher denominations are prohibitively rare.

Bank Notes from 1906:

The five and ten dollar bills issued by The Eastern Township Bank in 1906 are absolutely beautiful.  These are dated as January 2nd 1906 or January 2d 1906.  James Mackinnon is on the $5 bills and William Farwell is on the $10 bills.  We wouldn’t use the word “common” to describe 1906 $5 bills, but more than 15 are known to exist.  Ten dollar bills are about three times rarer.  Please consider us very interested buyers of either denomination.
