Value of Old Banknotes from Hart’s Bank of Three Rivers, Canada

Old Money from Hart’s Bank of Three Rivers

This bank is the text book definition of a private bank.  It was started in 1835 after Moses Hart was denied a charter.  The bank closed in 1847 when Hart passed away.  Notes were printed by Bourne.  Several different denominations were issued.  The first notes issued by the bank were dated as Oct 1 1837 and denominated in pence and sous.  Ten sous, twenty sous, forty sous, and sixty sous corresponds with five pence, ten pence, twenty pence, and a half dollar.  Bank notes from 28 July 1838 and Aug 20 1838 are denominated as one, three, and five dollars.  Many of the notes you encounter today are going to be either reprints or remainders.  Reprints and remainders are only worth a couple hundred dollars at best.  Issued bank note with signatures, serial numbers, and a full date are actually quite valuable and collectible.  Please send us pictures of what you have and we can tell you if it is authentic or fake.
