Old Money from The Agricultural Bank of Toronto

The Agricultural Bank of Toronto was one of the first banks in Canada to adopt what we now consider to be standard banking practices.  They were the first bank to pay depositors interest.  They also gave account holders checks.  Both of those were uncommon in the 1830s.  The bank originally opened in 1834 as a private bank named Truscott, Green & Company.  The bank closed in November of 1837.  Its bank notes instantly became worthless.  That is part of the reason most paper money from The Agricultural Bank is only worth around $100 in most cases.  People couldn’t redeem them so they just held onto them.  Large quantities exist today.  We have more information about bank notes below.

Bank Notes from 1834 – 1837:

The Agricultural Bank in Toronto issued lots of different bank notes over its short existence.  Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co. New York along with The New England Bank Note Co. Boston printed bank notes.  All issued bank notes should be signed by either Geo. Truscott or J.C. Green.  The left signor could be F. Franklin, H.J. Hensleigh, or W. Fryer.  All bank notes are denominated as dollars and shillings or pounds.  So we have one, two, four, five, ten, and twenty dollar bills.  Those denominations correspond to five shillings, ten shillings, twenty shillings, twenty-five shillings, fifty shillings, and five pounds.  Ten and twenty dollar bills are very scarce.  All other denominations are extremely common.  These notes can have pretty much any date in 1834, 1835, 1836, or 1837.  There are lots of varieties.  Please send pictures of your note if you would like a free appraisal.
