Value of Old Banknotes from The Home Bank of Canada in Toronto

Old Money from The Home Bank of Canada in Toronto

The Home Bank of Canada started as a loan and building company.  Its first bank notes were issued in 1904.  The bank ultimately would fail in 1923.  At that time it was the largest bank failure in Canadian history.  Its relatively short existence means that today many bank notes from The Home Bank of Canada are fairly rare.  See our guide below for more details.

Five Dollar Bills from 1904 – 1920:

Approximately 1.1 million five dollar bills were issued by The Home Bank of Canada between 1904 and 1920.  The exact issue dates are March 1st 1904, March 2nd 1914, March 1st 1917, and March 1st 1920.  Surprisingly, notes from 1920 are the rarest and notes from 1904 are the most common.  Each note has an orange tint, red serial numbers, and a portrait of Major General Sir Issac Brock.  Some notes could have a blue “S S” overprint.  Please contact us for exact value information.

Ten Dollar Bills from 1904 – 1920:

All bank notes issued by The Home Bank of Canada were printed by The American Bank Note Co. Ottawa.  Ten dollar bills are the highest denomination from the bank that is considered collectible.  Exactly 703,000 of these were issued between 1904 and 1920.  Issue years of 1904, 1914, 1917, and 1920 were used.  Once again, notes from 1920 are the rarest.  Bank notes dated as March 1st 1917 are slightly more common than notes dated as March 2nd 1914.  These could have a “S S” overprint in red ink.

Twenty Dollar Bills from 1904 – 1920:

We know that 65,100 $20 bills were issued by The Home Bank of Canada.  They are all very rare today.  Signors include E. O’Keefe, James Mason, and M.J. Haney.  We would love a chance to buy one of these bank notes in any condition.

Fifty Dollar Bills from 1904 & 1914:

You can probably guess based on the fact that we are showing a specimen $50 bill that issued $50 bills from The Home Bank of Canada are rare.  You would be correct in that assumption.  Only 22,400 $50 bills were issued for March 1st 1904 and March 2nd 1914 combined.  A discovery here would be a great find.  The design shows a blue background with red serial numbers.  There is also a vignette of the Boer War monument.

One Hundred Bills from 1904 & 1917:

Amazingly, only 6,500 $100 bills were issued by The Home Bank of Canada.  What is even more amazing is that at least a handful are still known to exist.  They can be dated as March 1st 1904 or March 1st 1917.  Each note has an image of the Champlain monument and a woman wearing a helmet.  All of these $100 bills are definitely on our want list.
