Value of March 1st 1870 $25 cents Bill from The Dominion of Canada

Dominion of Canada March 1st 1870 25 Cent Fractional Bill

Description:   Fractional currency was introduced in Canada in 1870. Twenty-five cents was the only denomination used. These were just supposed to be a temporary measure to offset the amount of silver coins coming in from The United States. These notes ended up being very popular. The front shows an engraved image of Britannia. The back is green and has text that reads “Redeemable On Presentation At Montreal, Toronto, or St. John.”

Varieties:   There are three main varieties to the 1870 25 cent fractional note. You can see a large “A” pictured below 1870 on the left hand side of the bill we have shown below. This is known as the series letter. Notes from the A series are relatively scarce. Notes that have a B or that don’t have a letter are much more common. Most of these notes will be encountered as singles. There are definitely premiums associated with uncut pairs and strips of 4 or 6 notes. A full sheet consists of 10 notes.
