Value of Old Banknotes from The Maritime Bank of The Dominion of Canada in St. John

Old Money from The Maritime Bank of The Dominion of Canada in St. John

The Maritime Bank of The Dominion Of Canada opened in 1872 in Saint John, New Brunswick.  A lot has been written about the history of the bank; however, we are most concerned with bank notes from The Maritime Bank.  Our guide below has lots of information about the paper money the bank issued.

Bank Notes from 1873 & 1875:

You can probably infer that bank notes from 1873 and 1875 are very rare based on the fact that the example we have pictured is extremely low grade.  The British American Bank Note Co. Montreal & Ottawa printed four, five, ten, and fifty dollar bills for The Maritime Bank.  These can be dated as 2nd Jan. 1873 or 1st June 1875.  Some notes are signed by A.J. Smith and others are signed by James Domville.  Domville is also pictured on four, five, and fifty dollar bills.  A.J. Smith is pictured on the four and five dollar bill.  J. Robertson is on the $10 bill and J.W. Domville is on the $50 bill.  And yes, all of these bank notes are rare.  Please contact us for details.

Bank Notes from 1881 & 1882:

All of these bank notes were signed by Thos. Maclellan and dated as Octr. 3rd 1881 or Nov. 1st 1882.  Five, ten, and twenty dollar bank notes were issued.  There are varieties based on if the note has a red “V” overprint and whether the note has blue or red serial numbers.  Generally speaking, the higher the denomination is, the rarer the note is.  We are definitely interested buyers.  Please contact us if you have something for sale.
