Value of Old Banknotes from The Bank of the County of Elgin in St. Thomas, Canada
Old Money from The Bank of the County of Elgin in St. Thomas
This bank was open from 1855 until 1862. It was the only institution in St. Thomas to issue paper money. Toppan, Carpenter & Co. Montreal printed one, two, five, and ten dollar bills for the bank. All notes were signed by Edw. Ermatinger and Colin Munro or Jas. Pollock. These only have partially engraved dates, so pretty much any date in 1856 could be used. Observed dates are 31st Jany, 25 June, 1 July, 1 August, 1 Sept, and 1 Dec’r. Most of these bank notes sell for several hundred dollars. High grade examples and rare varieties could certainly be worth more money. Please contact us for details.
