Value of Old Banknotes from Macdonald & Co in Victoria Vancouvers Island, Canada
Old Money from Macdonald & Co in Victoria Vancouvers Island
Macdonald and Company was open from 1859 until 1864. It was the first bank in Canada located west of the Great Lakes. The bank had a niche market, but it couldn’t really compete with the larger banks. It was a robbery that ultimately forced the bank to close for good. Today we have many bank notes from this institution to collect. Each note is dated as 6 Sept. 1863. One, five, and ten dollar bills were issued. There are two varieties for each denomination. Each note has a vignette of a young woman and an Indian. The common variety shows the maiden looking left and the Indian has his arm raised (as seen on the bottom of this page). The rarer variety has the maiden looking right and the Indian has his arm down. Prices range from about $100 to $2,000. Most items will sell on the lower end of that range. Please contact us if you need a free appraisal.
